Now that Smitty has achieved his land speed record at Bonneville, he is looking forward to being a crew chief as I become the primary rider for The Red Baron. It’s my turn to wear a leather racing suit in the heat!

We drove out to El Mirage Dry Lake on Monday with Smitty’s other motorcycle, the 1979 Hondamatic CM400A “Mighty Mouse” which has a big bore kit and larger carburetors. The goals of the day were to (1) get more seat time, (2) evaluate the lake bed conditions, and (3) rehearse the race procedures like the start-line take-off and finish-line turn-off.

We laid out a 1.3-mile course using cones, similar to a race event, and I completed eight runs up to approximately 100 MPH. The next step, later this week, is bringing The Red Baron out to El Mirage!
